North Carolina, a southern US state in the United States is a home to several unique and special natural as well as manmade attractions. The majestic Biltmore estate with exquisite gardens and wineries, the wonderful Chimney Rock Park with huge mountains and hiking trails, art centers, grand museums, historic districts to battleships and railroads in between, refreshing activities and much more make North Carolina a remarkable vacation destination and an all time tourist hub.

Spreading in an area of 139,509 square kilometers, North Carolina is also considered to be a Mid-Atlantic state. The state is bounded by South Carolina on the south, Georgia on the southwest, Tennessee on the west, Virginia on the north and Atlantic Ocean on the east.

Among the several beautiful cities of the state, the capital city Raleigh and the largest city Charlotte are quite significant and popular. Raleigh is the also referred to as the City of Oaks due to many oak trees in the region. Raleigh is the largest of the cities that compose North Carolina's Research Triangle. Apart from scenic beauty the city is known for the incredible advancement it has made.

Charlotte, the largest city is a contemporary and elegant center of business, culture and entertainment. Charlotte is a cosmopolitan city that offers much more than expected. For instance Charlotte includes city's primary historical buildings such as Fourth Ward and Historic Dilworth, cultural theaters like Charlotte Repertory Theater, Opera Carolina, wonderful galleries and museums such as Carolinas Aviation Museum, Charlotte museum of history, delectable cuisines and much more.

 

On looking at the history of North Carolina we find that the state was the first American territory the English had decided to make their colony. The original inhabitants of the area included tribes such as Cherokee, Creek, Tuscarora, Lumbee and Catawba.

The first permanent European settlers in the region were English colonists who had migrated from Virginia. In 1663 the English settlements further increased in the region especially in the northeastern area.

In 1712 North Carolina became a separate colony. On 20th May 1775 the Mecklenburg County became the foremost North Carolina County to declare independence from Great Britain.

On 21st November 1789 North Carolina ratified the constitution and became the twelfth state of the Union. North Carolina then tried to establish its state and local governments. On 18th December 1776 the first constitution of the state was ratified.

North Carolina served as a slave state during 1860. The state also witnessed several battles. In civil war North Carolina sent troops to the confederacy. The largest battle the state witnessed was at Bentonville. The second constitution of the state was ratified in 1868. This constitution was in accordance to the Reconstruction Acts. With some amendments in the second constitution, the third and final constitution of the state was ratified in 1971.

Time has drained and today North Carolina is a home to Fort Bragg, the largest military base in the United States of America, the Pope Air Force Base and Maine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. The state has progressed to a considerable extent and has earned great name in terms of agriculture, financial services and industry.
