Spread in a small area of 46.5 square kilometers
and inhabiting a population of 121,578 Connecticut is a US state
located in the Northeastern United States. On the south Connecticut is
bordered by Long Island Sound, on the west by New York State, on he
north by Massachusetts and on the east by Rhode Island. The capital of
the state is Hartford that is located on the Connecticut River, near
the center of the state.
Connecticut is quite an old state. The name
Connecticut is derived from the Mohegan Indian word “quinnehtukqut”
that means a long river place or beside the long tidal river.
Connecticut is also known as Conn. The official nickname of
Connecticut is ‘the Connecticut State’. This was adopted in the year
1959 after the state’s existing constitution was adopted.
Connecticut’s another name is ‘the Nutmeg State’. The people of
Connecticut are known as Connecticutians.
Connecticut is regarded as the fifth of the
original thirteen states. In 1633 the territory had its first English
settlers. They were English Puritans from Massachusetts. The territory
witnessed numerous ups and downs and finally on 14th
January 1639 its first constitution and the Fundamental Orders were
adopted. The constitution that exists in Connecticut today was adopted
much later, in the year 1965.
Over the years the western boundaries of
Connecticut have experienced various ups and downs. In 1650 there was
an agreement over these boundaries. According to this agreement with
the Dutch, the western boundary of this state ran north from the west
side of the Greenwich Bay provided this line does not interfere within
the 10miles of the Hudson River. In 1662 the Connecticut’s original
charter gave away all the western boundaries to the land of the South
Sea i.e. the Pacific Ocean.
However with the aid of the later agreements with
New York, the Pennamite Wars (fought between 1769 to 1799 and better
known as a series of military clashes for the control of the Wyoming
Valley in the northeastern Pennsylvania) with Pennsylvania over the
Westmoreland County, followed by the congressional intervention and
the relinquishment and the sale of the Western Reserve, the state was
brought back to its current boundaries.
The 9/11 tragedy badly afflicted Connecticut
because a large portion of its population used to work in the New York
city. But like the entire nation, the state too has recovered with
time. It has restored all its activities be it economical, cultural
and social. Again Connecticut can be seen swarming with tourists and
its residents busy in their day-to-day life.
